Located in Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture, Kaminoyama Onsen is a historic hot spring town that has flourished since the Edo period. The charming streets still retain the atmosphere of a former castle town. Among the many inns in the area, Hatago no Kokoro Hashimotoya stands out for its adorable rabbit-themed décor and heartwarming hospitality.
During my stay, I experienced:
- Healing moments surrounded by rabbit motifs throughout the inn
- Warm and attentive service that made me feel at home
- Delicious cuisine featuring local ingredients
It was a deeply satisfying stay from start to finish. This inn is especially recommended for those seeking relaxation or celebrating a special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. In this article, I’ll introduce the many charms of “Hatago no Kokoro Hashimotoya.”
What Is “Hatago no Kokoro Hashimotoya” — A Rabbit-Themed Welcome

“Hatago no Kokoro Hashimotoya” is a hot spring inn founded in 1948 (Showa 23). When you hear “an inn where rabbits welcome you,” you might imagine real rabbits—but that’s not the case. Instead, rabbit-themed ornaments and décor are displayed throughout the building.
So why rabbits? The reason dates back to the founding of the inn: the former proprietress was born in the Year of the Rabbit. She gradually began collecting rabbit items, and as the number of rabbits increased, so did the number of guests. Since then, rabbits have been cherished as lucky charms and lovingly passed down.
As you explore the inn, you’ll find rabbits in unexpected places—each discovery bringing a warm smile.
Welcome Drinks at the Lounge “Otokura”
From 15:00 to 18:00 after check-in, guests can enjoy a complimentary welcome drink service. At the first-floor lounge “Otokura”, not only soft drinks but also draft beer, wine, and cocktails are available—all free of charge.
“Otokura” is a relaxation space themed around “sound,” featuring a retro gramophone that creates a nostalgic and calming atmosphere. Naturally, rabbit motifs appear here as well—spotting them is part of the fun at this inn.

Enjoying a glass of draft beer in this cozy space was the perfect way to unwind after arrival. There is also a morning coffee service from 8:00 to 9:30, allowing you to relax once more before checking out.
Guest Rooms — A Modern Japanese Space Filled with Rabbits
All 16 guest rooms feature unique designs with a modern Japanese aesthetic. From special rooms with private hot spring baths (Hatago Kura Usagino Premium Room) to calming standard rooms (Kakure Kura Hanaoboro Standard Room), you can choose a room that suits your travel style.
Each room has a charming name such as “Takekago,” “Nekoyanagi,” or “Nagori-yuki,” adding to the inn’s personality. Rooms are equipped with TV, refrigerator, kettle, and free Wi-Fi, ensuring a comfortable stay.
Guests can choose between samue (traditional loungewear) for men and colorful yukata or samue for women. Walking around the inn in a yukata and taking photos adds to the enjoyment—especially for female guests.
I stayed in a standard room called “kaguraduki.” The room was filled with rabbit-themed décor, so cute that I couldn’t resist taking many photos.

Since each room has its own unique atmosphere, it’s exciting to think, “Which room should I try next time?”
Dinner — A Healing Experience of Beauty and Flavor
Dinner is served in a private dining room, allowing you to relax and enjoy your meal.

The kaiseki cuisine uses seasonal ingredients from Yamagata, beautifully presented and carefully prepared.
Every dish was truly delicious. The staff’s warm and attentive service made the meal even more memorable.

Even the tableware featured subtle rabbit motifs—so cute that I couldn’t help but exclaim out loud.

For special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries, you can order a charming anniversary plate. It’s beautifully arranged with fruits and sweets, sometimes with rabbit decorations, making celebrations even more special. Reservations must be made at least 3 days in advance, and the price is 3,300 yen (as of March 2026).
Hot Springs — Enjoy the Changing Seasons
Kaminoyama Onsen — A Famous “Beauty Hot Spring”

Kaminoyama Onsen is known as a “beautifying hot spring”, gentle on the skin and slow to cool down.
The water felt mild and soothing, allowing me to soak for a long time without getting tired. Even after getting out, my body stayed warm for quite a while.
Both the men’s and women’s baths include indoor and open-air baths. The open-air bath carved from a giant Zao stone offers a rustic, nature-filled atmosphere.
Private Open-Air Bath “Yuami-no Garden”
Although I didn’t use it this time, the inn offers a private open-air bath exclusively for guests. With only two groups per day, it provides a luxurious and private experience.
There are two types:
- Kazeaobi
- Tsukigomori
You can use one of them freely during your reserved time.
