[Yamagata Tourism] Discover Oe Roadside Station “Koramagase” アイキャッチ

Hello!
Today, I’d like to introduce you to Oe Roadside Station “Koramagase,” located in Oe Town, Yamagata Prefecture.

“Koramagase,” which also serves as the roadside station’s name, is taken from a verse in the Mogami River Boat Song. It’s a spot that brings together the charms of local culture, food, souvenirs, and more.
On October 5, 2024, the station will reopen in a completely rebuilt location next door to the original Oe Roadside Station.

This time, we’ll be introducing you to all the charms of Koramagase!

It’s not just the exterior that’s stylishly designed! Introducing the stylish facilities inside the building

Inside Koramagase Hall

The interior of Koramagase has a stylish design inspired by the small cormorant fishing boats that were used for shipping on the Mogami River!
Abundant use of local Nishiyama cedar has been made into the space, allowing you to feel the warmth of the wood.

Koramagase has the following facilities.

  • Everyone’s Space (Information Corner)
  • Agricultural Produce Sales Area
  • Specialty Products Sales Area
  • Bakery
  • Food Court

We’ll introduce each one in detail.

Everyone’s Space (Information Corner)

Located in the center of the facility, the “Everyone’s Space” is an open space where you can share tourist information and take a break.
Its impressive design is inspired by Oe Town’s boating culture, and it also has materials on the town’s history and attractions.

The warm, wood-themed space is the perfect place to take a break during your travels.

Agricultural Produce Sales Area

This direct sales area features an array of fresh produce harvested in town.
With a wide selection of seasonal fruits, including plums, grapes, chestnuts, and apples, you can enjoy different flavors every time you visit.

Another attraction is being able to pick up fresh vegetables and fruits lovingly grown by local farmers.

Specialty Products Sales Area

The specialty products corner, featuring exquisite products unique to Oe Town, is packed with items perfect for souvenirs, including the local sake “Oenishiki,” wine made with spring water, local miso paste, and sweets!

This shop is packed with the charm of Oe Town, featuring processed goods made with local ingredients and crafts that make great souvenirs.

Bakery

The on-site bakery offers a wide selection of unique breads made with local ingredients.
Enjoy the lineup, which is both visually appealing and tasty, including adorable breads featuring Oe Town’s mascot, “Puku-chan,” and breads inspired by Yamagata’s specialty, imoni (simmered sweet potato stew)!

Surrounded by the fragrant aroma of freshly baked bread, you can enjoy the pleasure of choosing bread that can only be tasted here.

You can also taste breads unique to Koramagase, such as “Mao Bread,” made with Aoso (blue hemp) from Oe Town, and “Aoso Curry Bread,” which were developed in collaboration between the bakery shop and students from local Aterazawa High School.

Additionally, freshly baked bread made with locally grown rice flour is a popular limited edition item only available at Koramagase.

Food Court

The food court, where you can enjoy dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, is popular with both tourists and locals.
In addition to weekly set meals, there’s also a wide selection of staples like ramen, curry, and rice balls.

There are raised seating areas available, perfect for families with small children, so you can enjoy a relaxing meal together.

[Cherries floating down the river!?] Fun seasonal events too!

Oe Roadside Station hosts a variety of fun seasonal events.

There will be a piano concert, a candy sale and raffle for children, a “killfish scooping” event where you can take home up to four fish you scoop up, “nagashi cherries” instead of nagashi somen noodles, and more!

Event information will be announced on the official Instagram, so be sure to check it regularly.

【Reporter’s Top Recommended Gourmet】Rare plum softcream! It’s delicious!

Softcream menu

In the food corner, the popular item is the “Plum SoftCream” made with plums from Oe Town! I chose the vanilla mix!

Plum and vanilla mix

The sweet and sour flavor of plums and rich vanilla are a perfect match, making this the perfect dish for a hot day.

The reason we chose a mix of plums rather than just plums is that this vanilla soft serve uses Yamabe Milk from Yamagata, which also makes for a very rich soft serve.

You can enjoy both flavors at the same time, so if you’re also into rich vanilla, we recommend getting the mix! It costs 430 yen (tax included) and features a cute pink color.

*Please note that the plum soft may be discontinued at certain times of the year. (It may be replaced by “La France Soft” instead.)

Please note that the type of soft serve may change depending on the season!

Also nearby is Oemachi Central Park, an open space with a lawn and playground equipment that’s perfect for families and couples to relax in. Depending on the season, you can see flowers blooming, making it a great place for a stroll.
