It’s especially recommended for anyone looking for excellent yakiniku in Yamagata City or wanting to enjoy Yamagata beef grilled over charcoal. It’s also ideal for those who prefer dining slowly in a private room. By grilling carefully selected Yamagata‑raised Japanese Black Wagyu over charcoal, the mellow richness of the fat is drawn out beautifully.

Shunkōen Suzukawa is an authentic charcoal‑grilled yakiniku restaurant located in Suzukawa, Yamagata City. The warm interior, accented with Korean cultural décor, creates a special and inviting atmosphere.

The restaurant is divided into private rooms and larger rooms for groups. Guests are usually guided to private rooms, but during busy times such as weekends or holidays, you may be seated in a larger shared room. If you prefer dining in a private room, it’s best to make a reservation or contact the restaurant in advance.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, they also offer lunch from 11:30–14:30 (last order 14:00).

Once seated, the staff brings in the charcoal. Listening to the crackling sound of the burning charcoal while waiting for the meat heightens the anticipation—it’s part of the charm.

Orders are placed through the touch panel installed in each private room. You can also request water, extra plates, or grill net replacements through the panel.

Time to Enjoy Carefully Selected Yamagata Beef!

Shunkōen Suzukawa offers a wide variety of meats and side dishes, but the four items I especially recommend are: Special Loin, Daikon Kalbi, , and Kimchi Assortment. They are on the luxurious side price‑wise, but absolutely worth trying at least once.

Here’s a closer look at these four dishes.

Melt‑in‑Your‑Mouth Yamagata Beef—Charcoal‑Grilled to Perfection

The meats and side dishes arrived. The carefully selected Yamagata beef has beautiful firmness and marbling—so visually appealing you can’t help but admire it.

The first items I tried were the Premium Beef Tongue and Daikon Kalbi. The beef tongue is enjoyed with green onion salt, while the daikon kalbi is paired with sweet‑and‑tangy pickled daikon. The crunchy texture combined with the aroma of green onion salt creates a refreshing yet satisfying bite.

The daikon kalbi combines the rich fattiness of kalbi with the sweet‑tart flavor of pickled daikon, creating a perfectly balanced dish that feels hearty yet never heavy—you could easily eat several pieces.

Next, I ordered the limited‑quantity Sakura Yukhoe and the Special Loin. The sakura yukhoe is made using horse meat prepared that day, so only a limited number of servings are available. The fresh horse meat has almost no gamey flavor, and when mixed with sesame oil and egg yolk, it becomes an exceptional dish—perfect with alcohol.

The special loin spreads a burst of sweet, rich fat the moment it touches your tongue. It’s so delicious you instinctively close your eyes. A luxurious cut you’ll want to savor slowly—truly outstanding.

Freshly Made to Order: “Homemade Cold Noodles” Pair Perfectly with Yakiniku

Another must‑try is Shunkōen’s Homemade Cold Noodles. Since the noodles are made only after the order is placed, it takes a little time to be served.

Ordering them together with your meat at the beginning is recommended—this way, they arrive around the middle of your meal, just when you’re ready for something refreshing.

Refreshing broth and chewy noodles

These cold noodles have a unique smoothness unlike typical cold noodles. The slippery noodles combined with a mildly acidic broth cleanse your palate beautifully.

With sweet‑vinegared cucumbers, fruit, and boiled egg, you can enjoy subtle changes in flavor as you eat—before you know it, the bowl is gone. You can also order extra spice on the side, allowing you to adjust the heat to your liking.

Kimchi assortment — homemade napa kimchi, kakuteki, and cucumber kimchi

I also ordered the Kimchi Assortment (large plate) and Sanchu as side dishes. The kimchi assortment includes generous portions of homemade napa kimchi, kakuteki, and cucumber kimchi.

My personal favorite is the cucumber kimchi, with its perfect saltiness and refreshing juiciness. The crisp cucumber paired with the daikon kimchi stuffed inside is outstanding—you can eat several pieces without getting tired of it.

Introducing the Charcoal‑Grilled Yakiniku Menu at Shunkōen

In addition to the dishes introduced so far, Shunkōen offers a wide selection of Yamagata beef cuts. They also have assorted platters and course menus, allowing you to enjoy yakiniku in various ways depending on your group size or occasion.

For gatherings or celebrations, the assorted platters or yakiniku courses are highly recommended.

The side menu is also extensive—so much so that it’s impossible to introduce everything. Kalbi gukbap, bibimbap, salads, soups… all pair wonderfully with the meat and elevate the overall dining experience.

飲み放題メニュー

They offer a wide variety of alcoholic beverages, including beer, sours, highballs, and makgeolli—essential for yakiniku. Since there is an all‑you‑can‑drink plan, it’s a great option if you plan to have five or more drinks.
