[Yamagata, Tendo City] Indian Restaurant Sultan | A place where you can enjoy authentic Indian cuisine at reasonable prices アイキャッチ

“Indian Restaurant Sultan” in Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Indian and Pakistani cuisine.
The appeal lies in savoring fragrant, spice-rich curries, freshly baked fluffy naan, and uniquely flavorful desserts in an exotic atmosphere. It is perfect for lunch or dinner with family or friends and is recommended for those who want to fully enjoy authentic Indian cuisine in Tendo City.
This time, we actually tried various dishes at Sultan! We will provide a detailed report with photos.

Can you feel like you’re in India? What is Indian Restaurant Sultan?

The “Indian Restaurant Sultan Tendo” located in Kamata, Tendo City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a popular restaurant where you can enjoy authentic Indian and Pakistani cuisine in an exotic atmosphere.
The owner, Mr. Amjad, with the belief of “wanting to provide dishes that make both the body and mind happy,” carefully adjusts the spices in the curry, serves freshly baked naan, and creates flavors that you won’t get tired of.

The interior is decorated with houseplants and Indian-style ornaments, and its unique atmosphere, inspired by the image of a “king’s room,” is also one of its attractions. Additionally, there are features making it easier for Japanese customers, such as spiciness adjustment and set options with naan and rice, making it popular for family outings and lunch or dinner with friends.

A Fragrant Feast of Spices! Indian Restaurant Sultan Tasting Report

内装
An interior full of exotic atmosphere

Sultan offers more than 20 types of classic curry! In addition, the side menu is also extensive, making it hard to decide what to order. This time, we tried ordering and tasting several items from such a rich menu! We will introduce them with photos, so please use this as a reference.

Curry, Tandoori Chicken, Pakora, and more! A wide lineup of authentic flavors

Photo of the side menu

At Sultan, curry is the main dish, and as sides there are many dishes you don’t usually see, such as tandoori chicken, spiced shish kebabs (grilled meat skewers), and pakora made from vegetables (similar to tempura). Everything is so delicious that you can’t stop eating.

Photos of the curry menu

Curry comes in various types such as butter chicken curry, beef, mutton, and dal curry, and there are as many as 22 kinds of curry alone!! I always end up wondering what to eat (laughs)

The photo is of a lunch set.
When in doubt, go with this! ‘Butter Chicken Curry’

The butter chicken curry, very popular at Sultan. It contains tandoori chicken inside, making it quite hearty.

‘Spicy Keema Curry’

The numbingly spicy kick of the spices in the keema curry is irresistible and delicious.

Rich and mild ‘Sag Chicken Curry’

My personal recommendation is spinach-based saag chicken curry!
It looks green, which might be a bit off-putting, but it has a very rich and mild flavor.
The thick curry sauce goes perfectly with naan!

‘Butter Paneer,’ slightly sweet and containing cheese

Another curry called Butter Paneer is a bit sweet, with chunks of cheese called paneer, and it’s really delicious! It has a mozzarella-like elasticity, and the flavor of the cheese spreads throughout your mouth when you bite into it, which is addictive. I recommend it to cheese lovers and those who are not good with spicy food.

‘Spicy Sauce’ that you can add heat to even afterwards

You can choose the level of spiciness when ordering, but they also provide a separate spicy sauce, so you can add more spiciness along the way! It’s a delightful service for those who love spicy food! Even those who are not good with spicy food can eat it with peace of mind.

A refreshing lassi for a heated body

There are lassis for drinks, and having them in between spicy curries can help soften the spiciness of the curry and the heat in your body with the sweetness of the lassi. There are many flavors of lassi, but if you’re unsure, go for a plain lassi.

There are so many dishes that it’s enjoyable to go multiple times. Being able to enjoy various flavors may also be one of the reasons it has been loved by many people for a long time.

[Recommended] All-you-can-eat lunch that naan lovers can’t resist

All-you-can-eat lunch menu

During lunchtime, there is an all-you-can-eat service for naan and rice. You can have as much naan and rice as you want within the time limit! It’s irresistible for naan lovers!

Photo of the lunch set
Freshly made chewy naan

The all-you-can-eat naan is served in half sizes, but even though it’s called ‘half,’ it’s a size that can’t fit in both hands! Don’t underestimate it.

Moreover, the freshly made naan is served piping hot, so be careful not to burn yourself!

The wonderful aroma of the freshly made naan and the chewy texture when torn by hand further whet your appetite for curry. The sense of happiness when it enters your mouth is simply irresistible (*´ω`*)

Later, crispy naan

One more thing to note here. The soft and gentle texture at first suddenly transforms into a crispy naan as you savor the lingering taste of the curry. This change provides a double enjoyment and doubles the sense of happiness, but it can be difficult to tear apart, so time is always a factor with all-you-can-eat. Caution is needed.

Since you can enjoy the texture of the crispy naan, sometimes I wait just to enjoy that, but since there’s also a time limit, I savor it while eating quickly (laughs). After finishing one piece, I move on to the second! But I’m already a little full… don’t worry! You can also order a half portion, so you can adjust depending on how full you feel! …I ate too much. I’m full (laughs).

By the way, in addition to the all-you-can-eat lunch, the ‘daily special lunch’ can also be enjoyed at a reasonable price, so it is recommended.

Dinner time where you can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere

I would also like to share a review of when I visited Sultan for dinner! Unlike its daytime appearance, the exterior blends into the nighttime city, and the atmosphere during dinner is different from lunchtime; the interior is a bit dim, and a relaxed time flows. Personally, I often go there for dinner so I can enjoy, without worrying about the time, the initial chewiness of the naan and the deliciousness of the curry, slowly savoring them along with the crispiness and the overall atmosphere.

The calm interior allows you to spend a relaxed time, so it might be nice to come here for a date or a meal with someone important!

The salad dressing is delicious

By the way, another thing I want to highlight is the salad! The sauce on the salad, with the richness of the spices, was so delicious that I couldn’t stop eating it.

In set meals or courses, it is served as an appetizer while the naan is being baked, but it has such an impact that one might forget about the main curry. I may be exaggerating, but personally, it was that delicious!

Enjoy curry leisurely

Time flows as you enjoy the aroma of the delivered curry spices and naan.

The enjoyment isn’t just about the food!

Photo of the shop owner

After savoring the dishes, I make my way to the cashier. What makes it even more enjoyable there is the owner of Sultan. After paying, the owner casually takes out a box containing lottery tickets and lets the customers draw one. The tickets include various discount coupons, and whether you win or not, the owner’s reaction and expression at that moment are also quite entertaining. (※ There may be times when the owner does not hold the lottery, such as during their day off or busy lunch hours.) The deliciousness of the curry is one thing, but I might also be visiting partly for the enjoyment of meeting the owner.

Summary

“Indian Restaurant Sultan Tendo Branch” is attractive for its authentic spice cuisine and the warm personality of the owner. Of course, the fragrant curry and freshly baked naan are highlights, but the rich menu and relatively reasonable lunch prices are also appealing. Moreover, Sultan offers not only delicious meals but also the unique enjoyment of casual interaction with the owner and lottery draws. This is a restaurant we highly recommend for those who want to casually enjoy authentic Indian cuisine in Tendo.
