[Yamagata, Sagae] Fast Food Sakuranbo Yuyu-kan|Ajiman Collaboration Monaka? Trying out JA’s unique handmade gelato アイキャッチ

Located in Sagae City, Fast Food Sakuranbo Yuuyuukan is a popular JA‑affiliated shop offering handmade ice cream, seasonal bread, and fresh‑made pizzas crafted with local ingredients. As a gelato lover, I suddenly craved some and decided to visit. In this article, I’ll share my tasting notes of three unique gelato flavors and the special collaboration “Ajimann Monaka Ice,” along with photos.

About “Fast Food Sakuranbo Yuuyuukan”

Fast Food Sakuranbo Yuuyuukan is an ice cream shop located next to the Agriland Farmers’ Market Center in Sagae City, Yamagata. Operated by JA Sagae Nishimurayama, the shop offers handmade gelato crafted from local ingredients, along with freshly baked pizzas and seasonal bread.

It is also a sister shop to Cherryland’s “Sakuranbo Hall JA Ice Shop” and Agriland Hina Farmers’ Market’s “Hina Café,” making it a well‑known sweets spot in the Sagae area. With plenty of table seating, it’s a comfortable place to take a break. I visited on a holiday, yet it wasn’t crowded, so I could enjoy my gelato at a relaxed pace.

Fast Food Sakuranbo Yuuyuukan offers a wide variety of gelato that’s easy to enjoy. The simple yet diverse flavors make it perfect for a quick break or a stop during a drive. Here are some of the menu items and prices from my visit:

Recently, they offered a Tuesday/Thursday special where you could get a triple‑flavor scoop for the price of a double. I visited on a Wednesday, so I missed it—but I’d love to catch it next time.

Over 120 Past Flavors! Vegetable Gelato Is Also Popular

Their regular gelato lineup is extensive, with over 120 flavors offered in the past. You can check them on the overhead menu.

Since it’s operated by JA, they offer vegetable flavors like corn and pumpkin, as well as unique varieties such as butterbur miso and pickled eggplant. Wasabi and chili pepper were big hits, while shark fin and curry received mixed reactions—great for conversation. (And what exactly is flavor #56 “Eye Drops Tree”…?)

New flavors during my visit were “Cream Cheese & Black Pepper” and “Roasted Sweet Potato Butter.” You can check available flavors on the board next to the ticket machine. The apple custard also looked tempting.

Tasting Report: Double Scoop (Cream Cheese & Black Pepper + Rice)

Double‑flavor ice cream

I visited because I suddenly craved JA’s gelato again. I often had gelato at Cherryland in Sagae, but the first time I tried their “Rice” flavor left such an impression that I still crave it occasionally. This time, I ordered the double‑flavor cone.

I chose the new Cream Cheese & Black Pepper and the classic Rice flavor. The black pepper releases a refreshing aroma the moment it touches your tongue—sharp in the best way.

Its clean sweetness pairs beautifully with the crunchy waffle cone—definitely a winning flavor. The rice gelato has a milky base with delightful grains of rice. When it’s JA’s rice, you just know it’s going to be good.

Limited-Time Winter Classic: Ajimann Collaboration “Monahana Ice”

“Monahana Ice,” a collaboration with Ajimann

I also ordered the limited‑time collaboration item with Ajimann, the Monahana Ice.

Ajimann is famous for its taiyaki-style cakes filled with mildly sweet Tokachi red bean paste made from 100% carefully selected Hokkaido Tokachi azuki beans, cooked in traditional copper pots. Their Tokachi bean paste is also sold at the shop, so many locals are familiar with it. Ajimann’s signature bean paste × handmade gelato… expectations were high.

The available flavors are sesame, matcha, and strawberry made with berries from Sagae City’s anniversary tourism project, Ichigo Garden. I chose matcha this time.

The monaka has an elegant chrysanthemum-like shape that looks absolutely charming. The shiratama mochi was warm enough to release steam—just like the limited winter Ajimann item “Furikoman,” which also includes shiratama. Chewy shiratama, bean paste, and ice cream… there’s no way that combination isn’t delicious.

First, I placed some ice cream on the monaka lid and took a bite. The crisp shell, matcha, and bean paste were a perfect match.
After enjoying the lid, I tried the base monaka holding the ice cream. It had absorbed the ice cream, giving it a soft texture—two delicious experiences in one. A highly satisfying Japanese dessert. Next time, I’d love to try the strawberry flavor.
