[Yamagata, Sagae City] Okashidokoro Chodani ‘Chodani’s Fresh Pie’ | Tried Comparing the Fresh Type and the Frozen Type! アイキャッチ

“Chōya Fresh Pie,” a beloved specialty from the long‑established confectionery Chōya in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, is a popular sweet known for selling out early in the day. Packed with rich, luscious cream, this local favorite has been loved for generations.

This time, I visited the Sagae store in person! I was lucky enough to purchase both the fresh type and the frozen type, so I tried them side by side. If you’re curious about Chōya’s Fresh Pie, this review will be helpful!

What Is “Chōya Fresh Pie”? About the Famous Confectionery Chōya

Confectionery Chōya was founded in 1932 (Shōwa 7) and remains a beloved Japanese–Western sweets shop today. Its main store is located in Aterazawa, Ōe Town, Yamagata Prefecture. They also sell their products at the newly opened roadside station Michi‑no‑Eki Ōe “Koramagase”, which held its grand opening on October 5, 2024.

In the early days—when even eating rice was difficult—using expensive sugar to make sweets was met with strong opposition. Thanks to their perseverance, we can enjoy these sweets today. It truly feels like a small miracle. For more about Michi‑no‑Eki Ōe “Koramagase,” check the article below:

The showcase was filled with beautiful cakes—and of course, the Fresh Pie was there too! They also had **Strawberry Fresh Pie**, priced slightly higher than the regular version. Frozen pies were available as well, which is great for stocking up.

What Time Does the Fresh Pie Sell Out?

I visited on a Saturday at 12:30 p.m. As you can see in the photos, only **3 Fresh Pies** and **6 Strawberry Fresh Pies** remained—just barely in time.

I often visit in the afternoon, and sometimes only one is left. When I need multiple pieces, I buy the frozen version from the start. Sell‑out times vary depending on season and timing, but on weekends and holidays, they often sell out early. If you want to be sure you get one, visiting at **opening time (9:00 a.m.)** is recommended.

Chōya’s No.1 Repeat Item — What Exactly Is “Fresh Pie”?

Chōya Fresh Pie and Strawberry Fresh Pie

Chōya’s Fresh Pie is introduced as a signature item inherited from Shibuya Shōkichi, a master of German confectionery. Unlike typical pies, which emphasize layers of pastry, this Fresh Pie is entirely different. The ratio of pastry to cream is practically 2:8—it’s overwhelmingly cream‑forward!

You still get the crispness of the pastry, but the star is the overflowing rich cream. The pastry has a pleasant saltiness, while the cream is smooth, rich, and elegantly sweet—like a perfect blend of custard and whipped cream.

It’s easy to eat several in one sitting. No wonder it’s the No.1 repeat item. The only downside is that it’s a bit messy to eat—but enjoying it at home, freely and boldly, is the best way. Seasonal flavors are available throughout the year, making it a shop you’ll want to revisit in every season.

生パイとは?

Tasting the Famous “Chōya Fresh Pie”

生パイ
Both the classic Fresh Pie and the seasonal Strawberry Fresh Pie

I often buy Fresh Pies as gifts, so I couldn’t remember the last time I bought one for myself. Luckily, both the regular Fresh Pie and the seasonal Strawberry Fresh Pie were available—so I bought both without hesitation.

Cross‑sections of the Fresh Pie and Strawberry Fresh Pie

Even the cross‑section looks delicious! The cream spilling out from the pastry brings an instant smile.

  • Chōya Fresh Pie — ¥200 (tax included)
  • Strawberry Fresh Pie — ¥240 (tax included)

※ Prices as of May 2026.

The shelf life is **2 days** when stored in a cool place.

The seasonal strawberry version has strawberry cream on top, with a pleasant tartness. The cream doesn’t ooze or drip—it sits neatly inside the pastry, as you can see from the cross‑section. It’s incredibly light and fluffy, melting away the moment it touches your tongue.

Fresh Pies often sell out by early afternoon. Frozen pies are available anytime, and thawing takes about 1 hour in summer and 2 hours in winter at room temperature.

Half‑thawed pies have a sherbet‑like texture, offering a completely different but equally delicious experience. Find your favorite texture and enjoy them just the way you like.

The shelf life after thawing is up to 2 days when stored in the refrigerator, and up to 30 days when kept frozen for long-term storage.

Fresh Pie Strategy Guide

  • Fresh type: Best crisp texture. Visiting before noon is ideal.
  • Frozen type: Great for long‑distance transport. Half‑thawed is actually the insider’s way to enjoy it!

Is There a Difference in Taste or Texture Between Fresh and Frozen?

This time, I purchased both the fresh and frozen versions of Chōya’s Fresh Pie. In conclusion: the taste is exactly the same. The pastry stays perfectly crisp! Their freezing technology never ceases to amaze me.

I haven’t tried the half‑thawed version yet, so next time I want to experience the sherbet‑like texture. It must taste like a creamy ice‑dessert—surely delicious.

If you plan to eat it right away, the fresh type is recommended. But if you want to enjoy different textures, choosing the frozen version is a great idea. The texture changes completely depending on thawing time, so doing a taste comparison could be fun. Just be aware… it’s definitely high‑calorie!
