Did you know that an stylish café opened on the first floor of the newly relocated and rebuilt “Prefectural Shinjo Hospital” in the Kanazawa district of Shinjo City in 2023? GOOD SAND CAFE is a bakery café that can be used not only by hospital visitors but also by the general public.

This time, I visited Shinjo City’s “GOOD SAND CAFE” myself, so I’ll share a detailed report with photos, including the menu and the atmosphere inside the café.

What Is “GOOD SAND CAFE” Inside Prefectural Shinjo Hospital?

GOOD SAND CAFE is located to the right after entering the main entrance of the Yamagata Prefectural Shinjo Hospital, adjacent to the hospital’s library. It is operated by Marchand Hokuō, a bakery known in Shinjo City for its “Nagomi Roll,” and all sandwiches and sweets are carefully handmade in the café’s kitchen.

The interior is bright and open, with natural light creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Products are displayed near the counter at the back right, with trays placed in front—clearly designed with customer flow in mind. There are plenty of seats available, so even during busy hours, it seems spacious enough to relax.

The library is on the left side. It includes books for toddlers and elementary school students, full-length novels, health-related books, and various other genres.

Since GOOD SAND CAFE is operated by the bakery “Marchand Hokuō,” the selection of sandwiches and bread is extensive. Smoothies also seem to be one of their featured menu items.

In addition to egg sandwiches and mixed sandwiches, there were many types of sandwiches available. All of them are handmade in the café’s kitchen. Savory options included BLT sandwiches, roast beef sandwiches, and cutlet sandwiches—hearty and delicious-looking choices.

For sweet options, they offered sweet bean paste & butter sandwiches as well as fruit sandwiches with strawberries, kiwi, and bananas—perfect for a relaxing break.

Plenty of Savory Bread Options Like Burgers

There was also a great selection of savory bread besides sandwiches—so many choices that it’s hard to decide. Teriyaki burgers, curry bread, yakisoba bread—all generously sized. The Zunda Croissant also caught my eye.

Choose from Smoothies and Frozen Drinks

Next is the drink menu. In addition to standard drinks like coffee, they also offered smoothies and soft serve ice cream.

Smoothies come in three flavors: green, mango, and strawberry. They also offer float drinks and frozen beverages. Café latte and caramel latte are available, and milk can be changed to soy milk for an additional 50 yen.

The items available that day included Basque cheesecake, raw chocolate tart, chocolate brownies, gâteau au chocolat, custard pudding, chocolate mousse, and sweet rusk-style treats. Items other than sandwiches are supplied from the main Marchand bakery.

How to Use the Café

At GOOD SAND CAFE, you choose your preferred items, bring them to the counter, and then order your drink before receiving everything. Payment can be made with cash or cashless methods. Sweets and bread are also available for takeout.

I bought the Basque cheesecake and chocolate brownie this time. Both were delicious!

GOOD SAND CAFE is located about 10–15 minutes by car from JR Shinjo Station. For car navigation, setting the destination to “Yamagata Prefectural Shinjo Hospital” works smoothly. You can use the hospital’s parking lot.
